“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Is this an outdated promise?
, Huffington Post, 7/4/2014
The Obama administration shut down the Amber Alert program because of the government shutdown.
Actually, each state has its own alert system, and national coordination takes place through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, a private nonprofit, untouched by the federal stalemate. Only a federal webpage promoting the program was closed for security.
Mike Huckabee
says if you cut out just four states, U.S. gun-homicide rate drops to Belgium's level
Even after subtracting California, Illinois, D.C. and New Jersey which have some of the strictest gun control laws in the U.S, the firearm-related homicide rate in the United States is still about four times higher than the rate in Belgium and the rest of Europe.
Political Satire
Texas has passed a law allowing incarcerated sex offenders to be used as subjects for medical experimentation.
Fabricated story published by National Report, a news and political satire web publication that makes up stories that are picked up and circulated as fact.
Barack Obama
How many of Obama's campaign promises has he kept?
PolitiFact has compiled more than 500 promises that Barack Obama made during the 2008 and 2012 campaigns and is tracking their progress on our Obameter45 percent were kept and 25 percent were compromised.  Check it out.

Pope Benedict
Documents reveal Pope Benedict Defrocked 400 Priests For Child Sex Abuse In Just 2 Years.
A document obtained by The Associated Press sheds light on the history of how the Catholic Church has evolved in it's handling of child sex abuse by priests. 1/17/2014
UN Committee Confronts Vatican on Child Sexual Abuse by Clergy January 17, 2014
A U.N. hearing in Geneva criticized the Vatican for its handling of clergy sex abuse cases, particularly for failing to require bishops to report suspected abuse to local authorities.
Larry Pratt-fox News
A gun "background check is futile. Something like 42 (people during the) last year … were prosecuted for trying to buy a gun with a criminal record out of 11 million."
In 2010 153,000 applications to purchase a firearm or obtain a permit were blocked. Thousands of individuals continue to be denied a firearm because of background checks by authorities and gun sellers.  Few are convicted.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla
The death penalty "is a deterrent that does affect and impact people."
Existing research doesn’t clearly show support for or against the death penalty as a deterrent, so Coburn can't prove his viewpoint is correct. (In England, when the sentence for picking someone’s pocket could be death by hanging, pickpockets were known to work the crowds at public executions.)  However, executions, along with prison sentences and other punishments for crime, do generally deter criminals.
Rick Perry Gov Tx
More than 3,000 homicides were committed by "illegal aliens" over the past six years.
For this declaration to hold water, one would have to assume illegal immigrants committed nearly half of the state’s homicides since 2008. His comment is not even supported by the study he says he relied on. These were charges, not convictions over a lifetime.  This claim was repeated by Greg Abbott, TX Attorney General, and gubernatorial candidate.
David Dewhurst
At "least a quarter of those apprehended" at the border "have criminal records."
Texas GOP Attorney General could not produce any data to support his claim.  Less than 5 percent of people apprehended by the Border Patrol from October 2012 through June 2014 had a U.S. criminal conviction or immigration violation.
Amy Klobuchar Cnn State Of The Union
Klobuchar: Children who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to commit domestic violence.
A 2010 study shows children who witnessed any intimate partner violence are 2.6 times as likely to perpetrate it themselves.  Children who witnessed any violence were 1.6 times as likely to become perpetrators.  We need new studies.
Republican Policies Questioned
Republicans For Kansas Values are backing the Democratic candidate for governor because the Republican agenda has backfired in Kansas.
This organization, supported by an extensive list of notable Republican politicians and public servants, has posted an impressive statement called, Why Sam Brownback’s Policies are Taking Kansas in the Wrong Direction. They say these Republican policies have caused deficit spending, drastic cuts in education and highway spending, hurt job growth, benefited special interests at the expense of the people, and downgrades Kansas character and creates embarrassing headlines.
Rudy Giuliani, NY R
"The conviction rate is almost exactly the same" for whites and blacks who commit murder.
There was no statistical evidence to support Giuliani’s claim, and even if there was statistical evidence it would have been cherry-picking data.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.
Peter King says there are 'No Elements of Racism' in Eric Garner case. He said this wouldn't have happened if he were not obese, diabetic and asthmatic.
Garner may not have died if he had not been obese, but most agree that it is unlikely this would not have happened to a white man. Rep. King only wishes race was not involved.
Doonesbury said 3,000 Americans "died of gunfire" between the time of the Ebola scare in Dallas and the midterm elections.
The number of deaths by firearm averages over 3,000 per year.  We don't have the stats in yet for 2014, but the trend should hold.  Two thirds of these are suicides, an often ignored stat in the gun rights debate.
Barack Obama
Obama: 'We're spending millions for each individual' held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
The Pentagon has reported that Guantanamo’s cost comes down to about $3 million per detainee per year -- about 100 times the average annual cost of a federal prisoner
Chain Email
Says a man in Ferguson, Mo., was photographed holding a sign that said, "No mother should have to fear for her son's life every time he robs a store."
The viral photo of a Ferguson protester was Photoshopped.(It is blatant lies like this that incite the prejudice --that creates the violence.) The real picture says, "No mother should have to fear for her son's life every time he leaves home."
Rudy Giuliani Ny R
Giuliani: Says President Barack Obama has said "that everybody should hate the police."
The truth is Obama has continuously encouraged working with police to find solutions and has also repeatedly emphasized the importance of law enforcement and the fact that police officers have a dangerous job.
Legal Issues
A Ferguson grand juror sues, accuses prosecutor, Bob McCulloch of mischaracterizing what happened in the jury room, and wants the right to speak out.
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed the suit for an unnamed juror to lift a lifetime gag order regarding the case. A juror disagrees with what has been revealed by McCulloch and feels the jury was ill informed. Legislators have asked for a review to see if McCulloch "manipulated" the grand jury.
The CIA paid two psychologists $81 million "to develop and run their torture program."
The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence report confirms the amount of money was spent on  a variety of things between 2005 and 2009, and other news organizations revealed the actual names of the two men, but additional information is needed.
John Legend
"We live in the most incarcerated country in the world."
The United States far and away incarcerates more people than its peers, in terms of the portion of its population behind bars, despite having a comparable amount of crime.
Rudy Giuliani Ny R
Giuliani says, Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Should Be 'Commended' For Shooting Michael Brown.
Giuliani attacks the Justice Department's scathing report of racial bias within the Ferguson Police Department, claiming that there was little evidence to prove racism within the department. On the contrary, most people can see plenty of evidence in the report.
Van Wanggaard
"There's no statistical evidence that" a waiting period for handgun purchases "reduces violence whatsoever."
There is research to indicate that handgun waiting periods are linked with lower suicide rates. But Politifact did not find evidence that waiting periods coincide with less violence being committed by one person against another.
Russell Brand
"The American murder rate is 50 times that of any other developed nation."
Yes, the American homicide rate is pretty bad, at least compared to most of its high-income peers. But it’s not even close to being as bad as Brand suggests. For instance, the homicide rate in the United States is just three times higher than that in the United Kingdom.
Cornell William Brooks- Naacp
Mr. Brooks, President and CEO of NAACP, says "We have at least 200,000 to 300,000 hate crimes in a given year."
PolitiFact researched by looking at the National Crime Victimization Survey does confirm his claim, with a 2012 report finding nearly 300,000 estimated victims of hate crime.
Bernie Sanders Vt Senate
Sanders says "A black male baby born today, if we do not change the system, stands a one-in-three chance (of) ending up in jail."
This calculation, according to PolitiFact, is 14 years old, and changes in the underlying data suggest that the actual odds of incarceration may be somewhat smaller today. Still, other evidence suggests that blacks have a disproportionate likelihood of ending up in prison.
Gavin Mcinnes
Gavin McInnes, co-founder of Vice Media, says "50 percent of murders in Texas have been linked to illegal aliens."
There were 3,384 homicides in Texas for the three years between 2011 and 2013, compared to an estimated 584 murder charges involving undocumented immigrants over a period stretching nearly four years. That’s nowhere near half, despite counting an additional year of murder charges involving undocumented immigrants.
Donald Trump
"Hundreds of thousands of (illegal immigrants are) going to state and federal penitentiaries."
PolitiFact found that in 2013, there were fewer than 100,000 noncitizens -- legal and undocumented -- in federal and state prisons. Though it’s also possible that many of these individuals are held for immigration violations as opposed to other crimes.
Bill Cosby
‘I’m No Longer Afraid’: 35 women tell their stories about being assaulted by Bill Cosby, and the culture that wouldn’t listen.
Cosby admitted in a recently released deposition, to pursuing sex with young women with the aid of Quaaludes, which can render a person functionally immobile. “I used them,” he said, “the same as a person would say, ‘Have a drink.’ ”  In this article, 35 women not only tell about being lured in, drugged, and assaulted, but they include the aftermath and trauma.
John Kasich R-oh
Presidential hopeful, Kasich says that real conservatism is watching out for the poor and disadvantaged, and that is good for the economy.
Kasich defended Ohio's Medicaid expansion by saying, when skeptics arrive in heaven, "Saint Peter isn’t going to ask them how small they’ve kept government, but what they have done for the poor." He quotes Matthew 25.  Healthy people are employable, and Medicaid money helps, rehabilitate prisoners and drug users, which saves money.  Ohio's budget has a surplus and he has cut taxes.
Ben Carson Gop Candidate
Ben Carson is open to using military drones on U.S. soil to secure border.
The retired neurosurgeon and GOP candidate has not clarified whether he'd back lethal force from drones on the border, or how drone strikes could be used without sacrificing innocent lives.
Ben Carson Gop Candidate
Says "56 percent of (the U.S.-Mexico) border is not under our control."
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a 2011 report that 873 miles of the U.S. Mexico border was under "operational control." The other 1,120 miles, or about 56 percent, fell under two classifications "not acceptable for border security." That doesn’t mean there is an utter lack of control, but that the agency’s ability to detect or respond (or both) to crossings was hampered by a lack of resources or infrastructure.
Black Lives Matter
The practical, thoughtful and urgent policy agenda put forward by Campaign Zero to support Black Lives Matter.
1. End Broken-Windows Policing; 2. End Policing for Profit; 3 .Limit Use of Force; 4. Demilitarization; 5. Body Cams/Film the Police; 6. Improved Training; 7. Community Oversight; 8. Community representation; 9. Fair Police Contracts; 10. Independent Investigations and Prosecutions.
Jeb Bush Fl
"The federal government right now does not deport criminals."
Bush points to reports that many criminal illegal immigrants have been released, and there is evidence that it sometimes happens. But it is an exaggeration to say that none are deported. Last year, ICE deported about 86,000 illegal immigrants convicted of previous crimes.
Nicholas Kristof-New York Times
Kristof wrote in the New York Times that "More Americans have died from guns in the United States since 1968 than on battlefields of all the wars in American history."
The number of gun deaths since 1968 — including, as Kristof was careful to note, both homicides and suicides — was higher than war fatalities by roughly 120,000 deaths, or almost four years’ worth of gun deaths in the United States.
Prison Reform
Juvenile prisoners in Michigan allege rape and abuse, with authorities turning a blind eye and ignoring the screams.
Eleven unnamed teens are suing Gov. Rick Snyder, the Michigan Department of Corrections and 15 wardens from facilities around the state for failing to protect an at-risk segment of the prison population and demonstrating "deliberate indifference to their safety.
Eric Bolling
Fox News’ The Five, Eric Bolling says "In countries where there are higher, more strict gun laws, there is more gun violence."
The data found by PolitiFact shows that among countries more like America economically, nations with stricter regulation have much lower rates of gun-related homicides.
Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin used the Iran Deal rally as an opportunity to refer to #BlackLivesMatter activists as “the dogs.”
The Black Lives Matter movement has been protesting police brutality and calling for criminal justice reform. Remarks like Palin's are exactly what creates the rage in the first place. Her bigotry  dehumanizes people across the country  and gives Christians a black eye.
Nancy Pelosi House Minority Leader
Pelosi wants Congress to establish a Select Committee on Gun Violence in the wake of the Oregon college shooting that left 10 dead on Thursday.
The House Minority Leader said, "There's already a Select Committee on Benghazi, and there will likely be one to investigate Planned Parenthood." She now wants to create a committee to investigate the "crisis" of mass shootings. In 2015 alone, there have been 45 mass shootings at schools.

Joe Scarborough
About "3 percent of murders and crimes are committed with guns from people who actually (legally) purchase those guns."
Studies of prisoners who had a gun when committing a crime showed that 3% to 11% purchased the weapon at a store or gun show. But the studies only tell us where the guns came from, not whether they were acquired legally.
Ted Cruz Tx
Cruz : "Here’s the simple and undeniable fact: The overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats."
Cruz misquoted a study of voting registration of all felons (not just violent felons) after being released from prison in three states. It does not address their political choice when committing the crime.  Less than half registered to vote after release, and most of those were Democrats.
Donald Trump
Trump, Republican presidential nominee, painted a picture of a nation in crisis, saying, "Crime is rising."
In Fact, crime rates have been falling almost without fail for roughly a quarter-century.  This includes violent crimes of murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault; as well as  property crimes like burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.  News coverage of crime may have increased.
Donald Trump
June Trump Truthfulness average is "Mostly False."
As of June 10, 2016, PolitiFact has reviewed 154 statements by Donald Trump. Twelve (12) were true or mostly true. Forty nine (49) were 1/2 True of Mostly-False.  And Ninety three (93) were False or Pants-on-Fire. Below are just a few:
Donald Trump
On May 4, 2016, Trump told NBC News that Germany "is crime-riddled right now" because of migration to Europe.
There are more criminal acts in Germany these days because there are more people, thanks to the influx of 1.1 million refugees in 2015 alone. But the data suggest that the refugees tend to be better-behaved than the typical German.
Donald Trump
Trump says it "is Hillary Clinton's agenda" to "release the violent criminals from jail. She wants them all released."
Clinton supports easing how the criminal justice system treats nonviolent offenders. Trumps claim is pure fabrication.
Donald Trump
Trump claims, "There are places in America that are among the most dangerous in the world." The crime numbers are "worse in places like Oakland or Ferguson"." Seriously."
With threats around the world like war, terrorism, kidnappings, and other violence, U.S. cities are nowhere near the most dangerous in the world. Four American cities — though not Oakland or Ferguson — have some of the highest murder rates in the world. However, with vast differences in reporting, experts told us homicide rates alone are not enough to gauge whether a city is dangerous or not.
Donald Trump
Trump claims crime statistics show blacks kill 81 percent of white homicide victims.
A day after a black activist was kicked and punched by voters at a Donald Trump rally in Alabama, Trump tweeted an image packed with racially loaded with fictitious murder statistics.  The stats show that 82% of whites are killed by other whites -Not 16% as Trump stated; and 15% of whites are killed by blacks- not the 82% Trump fabricated.
