Fact-checking Benghazi: The rhetoric hasn't matched up with reality
PolitiFact checked eleven popular quotes regarding the oft-investigated Benghazi tragedy.  Two were rated Pants-on-fire; three were False; five were mostly false, one was half-true; and none were true or partly true.  Millions of dollars are spent to support unfounded claims for political gain.
John Garamendi D Calif
"During the George W. Bush period, there were 13 attacks on various embassies and consulates around the world. Sixty people died."
PolitiFact found Garamendi slightly understated the number of deadly attacks and total fatalities, even using a strict definition, particularly when including attacks on ambassadors and embassy personnel who were traveling to or from embassy property.

Email entitled 'Meet Mohammad Fazl' claims to show Fazi with 5 severed heads.
This disturbing picture was widely distributed in May, before Fazi's release from Guantanamo Bay, and is really an image of an Iraq-born former Dutch resident "Islamic extremist" or "Islamic jihadist" named Khalid Abudurahman.
Rick Perry Gov Tx
The United States is at "historic record highs" of individuals being apprehended on the border from countries with terrorist ties such as "Pakistan or Afghanistan or Syria."
Data does not show and upward trend in apprehensions of individuals from those areas. Even if it did, many apprehensions of people from these areas happen at airports rather than land borders.  Perry's is trying to justify his expensive surge at the border, but needs to use facts and truth.
Rick Perry Gov Tx
Says three Ukrainians recently captured on a West Texas ranch are among "individuals from countries that have strong terrorist ties being apprehended" near the state’s border with Mexico.
These were Ukrainian men.  Perry had location of the ranch and the date wrong. And the Ukraine isn’t considered a country with terrorist ties.  These men are not being considered as terrorists.  Perry is trying to generate support for his expensive border surge, but needs to have his facts right.
Barack Obama
What has Obama accomplished as president? Which campaign promises were compromised? Which ones has he failed to keep?
PolitiFact has compiled more than 500 promises that Barack Obama made during the 2008 and 2012 campaigns and is tracking their progress on our Obameter.
Documents released by Edward Snowden reveal that American, British and Israeli intelligence agencies worked together to create the Islamic State.
This is a conspiracy theory about secret CIA mind-control programs and other baseless claims that were promoted by a Canadian, CRG and alternative news in Canada that promotes many other conspiracy theories.  Snowden has no connection to this hoax.
James Woods Actor
"The leader of ISIS was imprisoned by American troops and ordered released to Iraq by Obama administration in 2009."
The current head of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was held by U.S. forces for 10 months in 2004 at a detention facility in Iraq called Camp Bucca.  This was long before Obama became president. The false rumor was tracked back to an interview on the Daily Beast.  ABC News later questioned the facts.
Henry Kissenger, Nixon Sec of State
Kissinger: Drones have killed more civilians than the bombing of Cambodia in the Vietnam War
While data is not precise in both cases, there have been barely over 1,000 civilian deaths due to precise drone strikes, compared to at least 4,000 civilian deaths due to American bombs in Cambodia where Nixon ordered half a million tons of bombs over four years.
Sheik Abdulaziz Al al-Sheik
Saudi Arabia's top clerics condemn terrorism, citing Quran.
All 21 members of Saudi's governing council said that "terrorism is a heinous crime" under Sharia law.  They quoted extensively from the Koran and sayings of the Prophet Mohammad, which prohibit militant financing or encouraging young people towards militant acts.
"Three of five detainees swapped (for Bowe Bergdahl) are now ISIS leaders."
The claim has nonexistent sourcing, has been published by sites with questionable track records for accuracy, and has been knocked down by independent experts.
Greg Abbott Tx Gop Gov Candidate
Abbott claims during Sept. 19 Texas Gubernatorial debate, "I’ve been involved in prosecuting a terrorist member of ISIS."
He was referring to the arrest of Michael Todd Wolfe, an ISIS want-a-be arrested in Houston before leaving the USA. The FBI Central Texas Joint Terrorism Task Force conducted the investigation.  There is no evidence Abbott was involved.
Malala Yousafzai
Radical Islamist militants, Boko Haram, abduct more women in Nigeria.
Scores of young women were kidnapped from a mountain village October 18, 2014 in new abductions by Islamist militants.  There were similarities to the abductions last April of more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls.  This sheds doubt on a deal that promised the return of the first girls.
Pat Robertson 700 Club
Pat Robertson told his "700 Club, “These people (Gays and lesbians) are terrorists, they're radicals, and they're extremists.”
Robertson's anti-gay tirade October 22, came after gay Houston Mayor Annise Parker issued subpoenas to five prominent pastors who had opposed a new anti-discrimination law.  He said “No Christian ... would ever try to enforce somebody against their belief or else suffer jail." (Jail was never threatened.) While the subpoenas were inappropriate and were recalled, the anti discrimination laws are written to protect from people like Robertson. Jesus never discriminated against gays.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney
In wake of Senate report, Dick Cheney says terrorists 'not covered by the Geneva Convention'
The truth is unlawful combatants are still accorded a minimum degree of protection, including a ban on "violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture," and "outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment," both of which have been validated by the Supreme Court.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney
Cheney on torture report: Saddam Hussein 'had a 10-year relationship with al-Qaida'.
Chaney's claim on NBC’s Meet the Press, Dec. 14, 2014, is refuted by high-level government reports based on a trove of secret Iraqi government documents that fell into American hands after the invasion.
Peter King R-ny
Peter King says Senate CIA report found detainees were not killed, did not suffer 'lasting injuries'.
King minimized what the report said.   Someone did die, an eye was lost, detainees were made to stand on broken limbs and deprived of sleep for 180 hours.  One detainee suffered chronic hemorrhoids and anal fissure due to rectal feeding.  All likely suffer with PTSD.
Sheldon Whitehouse Ri Sen D
Waterboarding was declared "torture back when we court-martialed American soldiers for waterboarding Philippine insurgents in the Philippine revolution."
The "water cure" in the Philippines is not significantly different from the waterboarding done in reaction to the Sept.11 attacks in 2001. The Senate report from 1903 makes it clear that military prosecutors regarded the "water cure" as a form of torture.
Randy Weber R-tx
Republican Congressman known for making bombastic statements, compares Obama to Hitler.
"Even Adolph Hitler thought it more important than Obama to get to Paris. (For all the wrong reasons.) Obama couldn't do it for right reasons," Weber said in a tweet, referring to Germany's occupation of Paris in 1940.  White house says that presidential aides were caught off guard by the march’s massive size and attention, and there was no time to schedule security.

Rick Perry
"Obama has chosen to deny the vicious anti-Semitic motivation of the attack on a kosher Jewish grocery in Paris."
On several occasions Obama called the Paris attack an act of anti-Semitism. In one interview while responding to a question Obama said the attackers were "randomly" shooting people in the store.  Perry twisted words and implied meaning that was clearly not there.
Chain Email
Chain email: "Over 200 years ago, the US had declared war on Islam, and Thomas Jefferson led the charge!"
In the 18th century the US waged war against Muslim pirates who were the terror of the Mediterranean and a large area of the North Atlantic. This was done to protect US the merchant fleet. It was not a war on Muslims.
Marco Rubio
ISIS is "now the predominant Islamist group in Benghazi."
In reality besides some activity in pockets across the country, ISIS holds sway in Derna, but not so much in Benghazi.
Rand Paul Gop Ky
U.S. military involvement in Libya "allowed thousands of surface-to-air missiles to fall into the hands of radical Islamists."
US military involvement did not cause missiles to go missing, looting began before the US intervened, and while many of Libya’s 20,000 surface-to-air missiles did go missing during the conflict, thousands more were destroyed, recovered, rendered inoperable or believed to be in the hands of militias that aren’t radical Islamic terrorists.

Ayatollah Khamenei slams Republican letter on Iran. Says U.S. known for 'backstabbing.'
The letter from Republican senators and the speech by Israeli Prime Minister contributed to the Ayatollah's belief that the US cannot be trusted.
Glenn Beck
"A few weeks ago Obama took Hamas and Iran OFF the terror list."
Beck made a few clear mistakes here. First, it appears he mistook Hamas for Hezbollah. Second, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah remain on the official, and legally binding, State Department terror lists, as they have for decades.
Judicial Watch
"ISIS camp a few miles from Texas, Mexican authorities confirm."
U.S., Mexico and Texas officials told Politifact they had no information to validate or corroborate this bombshell.
Richard Clarke
"President Obama said he was going to stop (signature strikes)."
As far as Politifact can tell, Obama has never said himself that he would stop signature drone strikes, which killed two western civilian hostages. An unnamed administration official implied that signature strikes would eventually be phased out.
Jeb Bush Fl
"ISIS didn't exist when my brother was president. Al-Qaida in Iraq was wiped out when my brother was president."
A group called ISIS didn’t exist while Bush was president, but the roots of the organization were indeed present and operating under a different banner. As far as claiming al-Qaida was "wiped out," most experts consider that a stretch. The group’s power certainly diminished under Bush but it wasn’t wiped out.
Barack Obama
Obama said Iranian hard-liners chanting "death to America" and the Republican caucus were "making common cause" by refusing to support the Iran nuclear deal.
He pointed out that, "inside of Iran, the people most opposed to the deal are the Revolutionary Guard, the Quds force, hard-liners who are implacably opposed to any cooperation with the international community,"
Dick Cheney, Former VP
Cheney said that under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty "enrichment has been limited to basically the weapons states," and would ignite a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
The text of the treaty and subsequent international conferences say otherwise. If a non-nuclear nation wants to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, the treaty doesn’t stand in the way.
Donald Trump
Trump claims that under the Iran deal: "If Israel attacks Iran … we’re supposed to be on Iran’s side."
The claim is a misinterpretation of a provision that the U.S. and other partners are prepared, "as appropriate," to cooperate with training to strengthen Iran’s ability to protect against terrorists, saboteurs , and respond to nuclear security threats, and sabotage.
Muslim Star And Crescent
More than 1,000 Indian Muslim clerics sign fatwa against ISIS saying the acts of the Islamic State are inhuman and un-Islamic.
Religious leaders from hundreds of Islamic mosques, education institutions and civic groups across India have ratified the edict, or fatwa. "Islam does not allow the killing of even an animal."
Prayer Request
We ask every reader to take time to lift all the Paris victims and their families up in Prayer.
Don't forget to pray for the misguided members of ISIS who think that God likes the murder of innocents.  They do not represent Muslim teachings. Mohamed was a man of peace.  May they understand the true meaning of their faith.
Bernie Sanders Vt Senate
Climate change is "directly related" to the growth of terrorism.
PolitiFact couldn’t find any evidence of a "direct" relationship between climate change and terrorism, though many reports have noted an indirect link. There are, of course, many other factors that contribute to terrorism, including religious and ethnic tensions and political repression.
Hillary Clinton Presidential Candidate
Hillary said, "We now do have evidence" that Donald Trump is being used as a recruiting tool for terrorists.
That wasn't the case the first time Clinton claimed this. But now two different terror groups have used Trump's words in propaganda videos.  In one case jihadist propaganda, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. urges American Muslims to leave the United States and join ISIS.
Hillary Clinton
Hillary Clinton is innocent of any wrongdoing in Benghazi.
After spending more than two years and $7 million, the House Select Committee on Benghazi released a report Tuesday that found — like eight investigations before it — no evidence of wrongdoing by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or other members of the Obama administration.
